Everyday Math in Grade 1

February 7th, 2011

Dear Parents,

We are starting our Unit 6 in Everyday Mathematics. This unit focuses on fact families. addition and subtraction, ways to represent a number and digital clocks. Students will use triangles to help recognize ways that addition and subtraction are related.
For example: 3 + 2 = 5
2 + 3 = 5
5 – 2 = 3
5 – 3 = 2

Important Vocabulary
Fact family
Fact triangles
Centimeter
Digital Clock, Analogue Clock

At-Home Activities You can Practice
Reading an analogue clock and writing the digital time
Give your child 3 numbers and see how many sums they can make
Have a centimeter treasure hunt to find as many things in a room that measure 5 cm
Observe all the ways that we come across numbers in a day (time, temperature, distance, radio station, oven, money, etc..)

Please note that the math program is American and the homework might include 25 cent coins, if so, please skip over these questions as, unlike 5 and 10 cent coins, increments of 25 do not yet apply to other math concepts we cover in Grade 1 mathematics.

Thanks for your support,
Grade One Team
